Personal Statement

From the urban landscape where sea walls and riprap can rule, to the wild open floodplains filled with wildlife, rivers offer so much to all of us. Too often though, these amazing natural gems are too dirty, or their habitat and floodplain connection has been greatly altered or disconnected completely.

I've always found that, even in a compromised river, there can be beauty, and an abundance of wildlife. Some of the most surprising encounters I've had with birds, fish, and mammals have occurred in the middle of a highly developed stretch of river. One of the best examples of this are sea lions that swim over 100 miles from the Pacific to munch a few wayward fish where a river laps at the foundation of an industrial facility.

Stepping away from the river, we see the watershed and
the land and tributaries that surround any river. In reality, rivers are simply products of the lands around them—good or bad—and the decisions that people make that affect the land.

Going to these places and experiencing them in person and up-close is the best way to connect with them and understand them. Whether they are public lands in the wide open high desert, or a river valley in spring teeming with bird life, it can be well worth the time.

If you can't get there, photographs can be the next best thing. On this website I've sought to capture a few rivers and other landscapes photographically and share the perspectives I've gained. For details about purchasing a framed or unframed print, contact me at:

I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for taking a look!
